The Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies (CoE-GameCult) concludes its operations as an organisation after completing its full eight-year term (2018–2025). However, research on game culture continues. You can follow ongoing activities, explore new outputs, and initiate collaborations with individual research groups and game scholars at the participating universities.
We at the Centre are deeply grateful and proud of the many recognitions and achievements earned over these years. Dozens of dedicated people have invested significant time, energy, and expertise in describing, analysing, and interpreting some of the most complex questions and phenomena related to meaning-making and agency in game cultures. By collaborating across disciplinary boundaries and innovating at the intersections of humanities, critical social sciences, data analytics, communication and media studies, and many other fields, our researchers – together with numerous leading international scholars – have left an indelible mark on game scholarship and the broader landscape of game culture.
The CoE-GameCult has particularly been praised for combining excellent academic productivity and high scientific quality with an emphasis on creating societal and cultural impact. This would not have been possible without multiple organisations’ and individuals’ generosity and willingness to collaborate. We are happy to see that many of these collaborations are already continuing in some of the several spin-off projects that CoE researchers and research teams have initiated.
