abstract = {In 2019, FIFA Women's World Cup turned into a mega event with enormous viewing figures. The U.S. player Megan Rapinoe became a star of the tournament on and off the field. Her controversial presence as an outspoken athlete-activist gained attention worldwide. In this chapter I examine her representations in social and mainstream media during the World Cup. In context of social media I focus on her Instagram posts and ephemeral stories with ethnographic observation and field notes. I utilize feminist thematic analysis of female athletes’ self-representation strategies on social media. The key concepts emphasizing neoliberal post-feminism here are self-love, self-disclosure and self-empowerment. (Toffoletti & Thorpe 2018.) As a result, I argue that the time is finally right for the new kind of recognition of women’s football and therefore need for a rebellious female athlete who takes advantage of this opportunity to raise awareness of equality among (sports) people.

abstract = {Women’s tennis has a long tradition in the struggles for gender equality. In the article we study three female tennis stars from the different eras. They are Suzanne Lenglen in the 1920s, Billie Jean King in the 1970s and Serena Williams whose career has lasted for the past twenty years. Our analysis is based on a theoretical reading: we utilize the feminist methodology and Richard Dyer’s views on star images. Our source material consists of historical accounts as well as biographies, documentary and social media texts.
Lenglen can be called as a sporty flapper who revolutionize the style of playing and dressing in women’s tennis. She acted as liberating force in the era in which the rules and style of Victorian society still affected women’s daily life. Like Lenglen, also Billie Jean King emphasized the importance of professionalism. King was the most influential feminist-athlete in the 1970s. The establishment of the pro tour can be considered as her greatest achievement in women’s tennis. Serena Williams has fought, in particular, for the rights of black women. She has also repeatedly spoken about improving the status of female athletes. In her activism for equality and non-discrimination, Williams has taken the advantage of social media. However, as the multiple othering of Williams indicates, there is still abundantly obstacles along the way to gender equality in the world of sport, as well as in society at large.},

abstract = {Sports and games share many defining features, among them the aspects of playfulness and competition, and new forms of gamified sports and sportified gaming are emerging from the intersections of game and sports cultures. In this essay, we explore a sports competition CrossFit Open 2018 through its various levels of gamefulness and playfulness, asking: In what ways is the CrossFit Open a game? How can it be played? How and whom does it invite to play? In our reading, we present the CrossFit Open as a current pinnacle of the hybridization of sports and games, combining playful forms of exercise with high-level competition, gamified measuring of performance, and participatory play in social media – a game in which the field of play exceeds the limits between offline and online environments.},
